Build the Strength and Confidence to Keep Doing What You Love

Most Pilates instructor courses teach you the choreography. Very few teach you the body.

The PhysioXtra Pilates Academy was built to close that gap. Every course is designed by Kathryn Chigwidden and delivered by our Academy Education Team, combining four decades of clinical physiotherapy with extensive Pilates training, so you graduate understanding not just what to teach, but why it works and who it is safe for.

Whether you are starting a new career, adding Reformer Pilates to your health or fitness qualifications, or deepening your own practice, you will learn in small groups, hands on, with a mentor beside you the whole way.

About the Academy

Pilates Education Grounded in 40 Years of Clinical Experience

If you have ever taken a Pilates class and wondered whether the instructor really understood what was happening in your body, you already understand why this academy exists.

The PhysioXtra Pilates Academy provides comprehensive Pilates education in a supportive, professional learning environment in South Australia. It is led by Physiotherapist and Pilates Educator Kathryn Chigwidden, which means everything you learn is filtered through clinical knowledge, not just class plans.

Our teaching is built on four things:

  • Evidence based movement education

  • Safe and effective exercise prescription

  • Functional movement and body awareness

  • Practical teaching skills with real hands-on experience

We believe great Pilates instructors need more than choreography. They need a genuine understanding of anatomy, movement mechanics, communication, and the individual in front of them. That is exactly what we teach.

Kathryn Chigwidden is a Titled MSK Physiotherapist who has been working in Private Practice for over 40 years. She has worked with several high-profile sporting teams and athletes including the Glenelg Football Club League and Reserves, Adelaide Thunderbirds Netball Team and The English Roses. Take the guesswork out of exercise with professional support beside you

Why Choose PhysioXtra Pilates Academy

Five Reasons Students Choose the PhysioXtra Pilates Academy

There are plenty of Pilates certifications out there. Here is what makes this one different.

Physiotherapy Led Education

You learn directly from a Physiotherapist with more than 40 years of clinical experience. When a student asks why an exercise is unsafe for a particular client, you get a clinical answer, not a guess.

Evidence Based Teaching

Every course is grounded in anatomy, biomechanics, rehabilitation principles and current movement science. You graduate able to explain your teaching decisions, which is exactly what employers and clients trust.

Practical, Hands On Learning

You will spend real time on the Reformer, teaching real people, receiving real feedback. The skills you build here are ones you can apply in a class the very next day.

A Genuinely Supportive Environment

This is mentoring, not lecturing. Confidence building is a deliberate part of the curriculum, because knowing the material and being able to stand in front of a class are two different skills.

Small Group Learning

Small intakes mean more individual attention, more time on equipment, and more opportunities to practise teaching. You are a student here, not a seat number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior Pilates experience to enrol?

No. The Reformer Foundations Course is suitable for beginners, while the full Instructor Training suits those with some movement background or professional experience. If you are unsure, contact us and we will guide you to the right starting point.

Are the courses accredited?

Pilates is not currently governed by a single international accrediting or regulatory body, so there is no universal accreditation standard for Pilates instructor training.

Our courses are delivered through PEI (Pilates Education Institute) and, upon successfully completing the course and assessment requirements, you will receive a Certificate of Completion recognised by PEI and the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA).

While Pilates instructor training does not currently attract formal CEC or CPD points through a governing Pilates body, our courses are designed to provide comprehensive, professional education and the practical skills required to teach Reformer Pilates safely and confidently.
